Mountain After Rain — sumi ink on washi

Kenta Mori

Japanese ink painting — sumi-e, brush and ink on washi

I paint with ground ink on mulberry paper, in the tradition where a stroke cannot be taken back. Most of what I make is mountains and water — and the birds that live between them. The empty paper is part of every painting.

Sumi ink · ink stone · washi (mulberry paper) · bamboo and hake brushes

Commissions

A commissioned painting starts with a conversation about what the piece should hold: a place, a season, a person, a memory.
